A viola is very similar to a violin, except it’s much bigger. They’re both stringed instruments you play with a bow, and they both originated in Italy.
In addition to its larger size, the viola plays a much deeper, mellower sound than the violin. It’s been used as the alto voice (middle) of the violin family since the 18th century, between the violin and cello.
